The Historical Institute is collaborating on the project “How Processions Moved: Sound and Space in the Performance of Urban Ritual, c. 1400–c. 1700”, led by researcher Tess Knighton, through its participation in the seminar entitled “Processions, the Inquisition, sounds and emotions in urban spaces of the Early Modern period”, which is being held at the CSIC’s Residència d’Investigadors in Barcelona on 14 and 15 May.
The aim of the seminar is to analyse and discuss urban ritual and its political, religious, sensory and emotional impact on the streets of modern Barcelona. To this end, the event is structured around three thematic sessions.
The first, entitled “Spaces”, focuses on the interaction between urban places and emotions. Speakers include Flocel Sabaté, Tess Knighton, Ramón Pujades, Chiara Mazzoleti and Sergi González.
The second session, entitled “Counterpoints: urban processional rituals”, takes place on the afternoon of 14 May and features presentations by Joan-Lluís Palos, Francesc Orts Ruiz, Gabriel Torres Puga, Lola Peña, Andrea Gutiérrez and Antonio Arnieri. This session analyses the role of various authorities in processions, such as the Inquisition, the Brotherhood of the Name of Jesus, the city council and the episcopate. Afterwards, participants will visit the Palace of the Inquisition in Barcelona, located in the Palau Reial Major.

Finally, the third session, to be held on the morning of 15 May under the title "Voices", will feature speakers Doris Moreno, Ascensión Mazuela Anguita, Manuel Peña, Jesús Gascón, Eduardo Carrero, Pablo Acosta García and Helen Herbert, who will discuss the role of preaching and music in the Modern Age.
