The Universidad de Navarra hosts the meeting "A thomist solution to determinism: Francisco Marin Sola and his Concordia"
The research project of the Historical Institute of the Province of Hispania of the Order of Preachers, entitled “Edition and Study of Marín Sola’s Work on Grace”, has held its first meeting in Pamplona. This meeting provided an opportunity for an initial public presentation of the project at the Faculty of Philosophy and Arts of the University of Navarra, to which some of the researchers belong. The meeting revealed the researchers’ intention to disseminate his work on the problem of the harmony between divine assistance and human freedom. The project is working on the publication of his articles on this subject, but above all on his extensive unpublished work.

At this meeting, Professor Lucas Prieto gave a presentation on the biographical profile of this distinguished Navarrese Dominican, who died just under a century ago. Prieto highlighted the impressive intellectual profile of the religious scholar, who taught in Manila, Notre Dame (United States) and Fribourg. In addition to his contribution to the question of determinism and human freedom, Marín Sola is known for his important book La evolución homogénea del dogma católico (1923). Professor Agustín Echavarría then spoke on the philosophical and theological issues raised by Marín Sola concerning the question of divine foreknowledge of human acts and our freedom. Echavarría highlighted the connection between Marín Sola’s thinking and Jacques Maritain’s reflections on the subject.
