On 9 June, the exhibition “Texts by Professors of the University of Barcelona (1450–1717): Teaching and Knowledge” opened in CRAI Biblioteca Fons Antic, located in the university’s historic building. The exhibition, curated by Professors Pedro Rueda Ramírez and Neus Verger, demonstrates how the university’s professors were producers of knowledge and active agents in society.

The exhibition displays a selection of books on the subjects taught at the university: arts, philosophy, medicine, law and theology. These books demonstrate how professors were not solely dedicated to teaching within the university, but also played an active role in the society of their time.

For this exhibition, the curators have been assisted by a number of specialists in various fields: Agustí Alcoberro, Alejandra Guzmán, Josep Pla Carrera, Maria Teresa Huguet, Oriol Oleart Piquet and Alejandro López Ribao, director of the Historical Institute. Their collaboration enables visitors to understand the context in which the books and materials on display were used.

The exhibition, held to mark the 575th anniversary of the University of Barcelona, is open to the public in the Rare Books Room of the CRAI Biblioteca Fons Antic, in the university’s historic building in the centre of Barcelona, until 30 July. There will also be two guided tours of the exhibition: the first on 16 June at 5.00 pm, and the second on 25 June at 5.00 pm. On 25 June, following the tour, Professor Rafael Ramis Barceló of the University of the Balearic Islands, a specialist in the history of universities, will give a lecture entitled “The historical development of the University of Barcelona during the Habsburg era” in the Ramón y Cajal lecture theatre. To take part in the guided tours and the lecture, you must register in advance by email.
